Miss Norman as the title heroine in Gluck's Alceste, in her 1990 debut at Lyric Opera of Chicago 글룩의 <알체스테> 중에서 알체스터의 아리아 '지옥의 신이여' Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714 - 1787) / 'Divinite's du Styx, ministres de la mort!' from Alceste (Act 1) Chor und Symphonieorchester Des Bayerschen Rundfunks Serge Baudo, Conductor Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra <오르페오와 에우리디체> 의 성공 이후 1767년에 발표한 <알체스터> 역시 그리스 신화를 바탕으로 한 지고지순한 사랑의 이야기를 담고 있다. 테살리아의 왕 아드메투스가 병상에서 임종을 기다리고 백성들은 비탄에 빠져 있을때, 누군가 아드메투스를 대신하여 죽는다면 왕은 소생할 것이라는 아폴로의 계시에 따라 왕의 아내 알체스터는 죽음을 결심한다. 알체스터가 1막에서 부르는 이 장엄한 아리아 '스틱스의 여신 Divinit's du styx' 는 남편의 목숨을 구하기 위해 자신을 지하 세계의 신에게 제물로 바칠 것을 맹세하는 결연함이 깃들어 있다.
